A teacher is competent with a thorough understanding of multiple instructional techniques to keep learners engaged and invested. They will also allow their students to gain knowledge, master the content, and apply their acquired skills to real-world problems. This standard is important as teachers must use diverse learning techniques and strategies to keep students engaged during class time. This will allow learners to truly understand the content and retain it for application outside of the classroom. This can be demonstrated through a five-question reflection sheet, legislative branch poem, and student-made Canva presentation on a chosen World War I topic.
I love to use student-driven learning as my instructional strategy. Students can stay motivated and research what fascinates them instead of me just lecturing at the front of the class. For a lesson on the bill of rights, I will allow students to find a YouTube video they feel in interesting on this topic. Students will watch their selected video and take notes. After the video is finished, students will answer a five-question reflection sheet. I will able to quickly see what they learned and what they felt was interesting.
Students will create a legislative branch poem to summarize its function in our government. This utilizes creative writing and summarization as the instructional strategy, which helps students understand difficult content in an easier way. It must have at least five stanzas. It will describe what this branch does, where the Constitution explains its powers, and more. This poem can be presented to class, but it will be up to the student to decide.
Next, students will create a World War I Canva Presentation and present this to the class. This caters to the project based learning instructional strategy, which encourage creativity and also teaches their fellow peers. Each person will present their presentation at the beginning of class to introduce a lesson to their classmates. It will be ten slides long on a specific World War I topic, as there are various options included (Examples: trench warfare, horses, etc).
