Learner Development

Differentiation- What, When, Where.... How?Teachers will be able to recognize the differentiated ways students learn, while also taking cognitive, behavioral, linguistic, and physical needs into account to structure lessons that will challenge a student and their specific learning needs. I will provide a short pre-assessment to each student so I may determine how they learn best. Additionally, there will be game board projects and homework assignments where learners can select what interests them most. All of my lessons will have options for the various ways of learning.  This standard is important as teachers can provide differentiated instruction to support students in the methods they learn best so each may achieve the highest levels of success and understanding. Thus, the pre-assessment, game board project, and historical homework challenge will cater to the unique needs of all learners.

Homework can be difficult for students to have the motivation to do. To assist with this, my historical homework challenge on Anne Frank is in open ended in options that cover every learning style. For example, students can choose from creating floor plans of the annex, diary entries, songs, scene reenactments, or more. This incorporates an assignment (following their reading of the assigned chapters) which will appeal to every learning style a student can have.

For project work, I have created a Tic-Tac-Toe game board, where students must select three mediums of work to complete.  They will be a diagonal, vertical, or horizontal line which would win in a standard game. This way, multiple methods from each learning styles can be incorporated, along with having a fun project! Allowing student to choose options is a great way to motivate them as well. Students may pick whatever interests them and benefits their own differentiated ways of learning.

To figure out a student’s learning style, a teacher must determine what ways a child learns best. These seven learning styles (visual, bodily, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, and logical) originate from Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory and explain methods beneficial for each. Students will take my pre-assessment, which utilizes Google Forms, and I will then read over their responses to fit them into a specific learning style. Additionally, these will enable me to create lessons specialized for every student.
