Learning Differences

Why Should Teachers Differentiate? Five Compelling Reasons - Solution Tree BlogA teacher will use differentiated instruction and cultural inclusivity to provide students with a welcoming, respectful, and positive atmosphere. Moreover, learners can apply the content learned to real-world scenarios. This standard is important as it allows teachers to incorporate a wide variety of different cultures and experiences, while providing an inclusive space that caters to the learning styles of each specific student. Through individual PowerPoints, student-designed interactive Kahoots, and personalized timelines for notes, students will be able to learn about various cultures histories. Each of these methods feature differentiated instruction, the teacher has multiple ways to assess student understanding, provides individual support, and offers opportunities for peer collaboration, fostering a deeper learning experience.

For the subject of history, it is a wonderful task to include the study of diverse cultures, languages, and groups of people in lessons while attuning to differentiated instruction. Students will each create a minority group PowerPoint about those who underrepresented in the present day. Students will then present their PowerPoints to the class to explore and appreciate diversity. Detailed research on the histories and challenges faced by each group should also be included.

Afterwards, learners will indulge in a fun and creative cultural Kahoot (online interactive game-like quiz) to see how much of the content was retained. The class will be able to learn about multiple minority groups through the Kahoot made by their peers; thus students are able to become specialists of their chosen group and learn from one another. Various cultural backgrounds and student interests will be delved into with this lesson. Students will be able to understand multiple perspectives and diversity in a supportive thoughtful way.

Students will also create an online and interactive World War I Timeline through Canva about major events, battles, people, and places. This will allow for their own personal designs, creativity, and style. They will update this timeline as a class and the lessons progress, using it to take their notes. In my example, you will see it is not fully completed as students would continually update this during class. Students can use any type of template they wish or create this timeline from scratch. Video and audio clips may also be embedded. Thus, their own interests and learning styles will be appealed to.
